China's Gotion High-Tech has secured contracts covering 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage capacity under Saudi Power Procurement Company's (SPPC) first group (G1) of utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) procurement programme.

According to the company’s press statement, it secured Al Muwayah, Haden and Al Kahafa projects, each with a capacity of 500 megawatts (MW)/2gigawatt-hours (GWh), giving Gotion a combined capacity of 1.5GW/6GWh.

The contracts mark the first large-scale international deployment of Gotion Grid, the company's utility-scale battery storage system.

It said the projects will be connected to Saudi Arabia's 380-kilovolt (kV) transmission network and will be designed for remote operation.

Al Muwayh and Haden BESS projects are located in Makkah region while Al Kahafa is located in Hail region.

The three projects represent 75 percent of the 2GW/8GWh G1 programme, which has an estimated value of around $1.16 billion, according to information provided by the company.

Last month, SPPC had signed 15-year Storage Service Agreements (SSAs) for the three Independent Storage Provider (ISP) projects with a consortium comprising Saudi Energy Company, ACWA Power and Al Sharif Contracting and Development Company.

The SSA for the fourth project, Al Khushaybi in Qassim region, was signed with a consortium comprising ENGIE and Haji Abdullah Ali Reza & Partners Co. Ltd (HAACO).

Gotion said its Gotion Grid has a 25-year design life, compared with what the company described as an industry average of 15-20 years. The system also incorporates an AI-based battery management system for dispatch, safety monitoring and lifecycle diagnostics, according to the company.

Gotion said its battery storage project portfolio across the Middle East and North Africa region stands at around 9GWh. These include a 1.5GWh BESS project in Egypt, alongside plans for 3GWh of local manufacturing capacity, and a 1.2GWh project in Morocco with ACWA Power.
