Astra Space, Inc. Company profile
Founded in 2016, Astra Space. (ASTR) set out on a mission to provide daily access to space via a low cost orbital launch service. The company designs, manufactures, tests, launches and operates propulsion modules to enable satellites to orbit in space.
Headquartered in Alameda, California, the company has a large cohort of customers that includes satellite operators, satellite manufacturers, government agencies and defence prime contractors.
The company, which aims to offer flexible and cost-effective rides into orbit, reached space for the first time in December 2020.
Astra has made solid progress from its first test flight, which was unsuccessful. The 38-foot-tall Rocket 3.2 launched from the Pacific Spaceport Complex on Alaska's Kodiak Island, but ran out of fuel just seconds before attaining orbital velocity.
The acquisition of Apollo Fusion, a leading electric space-propulsion company in June 2021, could help it reach new targets.
The company has more than 50 contracted launches worth more than $150 million. It aims to start flying once a month by the end of 2022, weekly in 2023 and reach a nearly daily schedule by 2025.
Astra faces competition from companies such as Rocket Lab (RKLB), Blue Origin (BLUE) and Virgin Galactic (SPCE).
Astra is one of the first space launch companies to be traded on the Nasdaq,, going public in July 2021 after a merger with Holicity, a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The company trades under the ticker ‘ASTR’.
