Work continues to build 700 kilometres (km) of roads and more than 300 km of intersections to improve traffic flow in Riyadh, Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) CEO Ibrahim Al-Sultan has said.

Construction is also underway on more than 300 bridges and 80 tunnels in the Saudi capital to improve the road network’s efficiency and keep traffic flowing smoothly in the capital, he said in a post on X.

The CEO said work continues on 14 major parks in Riyadh, covering more than 12 million square metres (sqm), as part of efforts to develop green spaces and enhance the quality of urban life in the city. Work at King Abdulaziz Park and Al-Urubah Park have reached 50 percent and 55 percent, respectively.

Al-Sultan said Riyadh’s public transport network has served 500 million passengers since it began operations, including 300 million on the Riyadh Metro. He said contracts have been signed to purchase 94 trains, increasing the fleet from 183 to 277 to support expansion and meet growing demand.

Last week, International Railway Journal reported that RCRC signed a contract with Alstom worth €460 million for the supply of an unspecified number of additional driverless metro trains for lines 3, 4 and 6.

Saudi Arabia aims to catapult Riyadh into the ranks of top 10 global cities by 2030 under Vision 2030.
