- Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, a shareholder in family holding company Delfin, said on Thursday he had been informed in recent days of an offer from a foreign financier for the company.

Luxembourg-based Delfin is the largest shareholder in eyewear group EssilorLuxottica ESLX.PA and holds stakes in Italian insurer Generali GASI.MI and lender Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) BMPS.MI.

Italian newspaper Il Domani reported on Thursday that Czech billionaire Michal Strnad had sent a letter to Delfin offering about €30 billion to acquire the holding company.

"The work of a lifetime by my father must remain part of Italy's heritage", Del Vecchio, who owns a 12.5% stake in Delfin, said in a statement.

Delfin declined to comment.
