Bayer AG (BAYN) is a multinational pharmaceutical and life sciences company. Comprising over 350 companies, it operates as one of the world's largest chemical manufacturers. The business is producing and marketing innovative products in four core segments: human and veterinary pharmaceuticals; consumer healthcare products; agricultural chemicals, seeds and biotechnology products.
The company is headquartered in Leverkusen, Germany, and has operations in nearly every country in the world with a majority of its business in Europe, North America and the Far East. At the end of 2019, Bayer had a team of over 100,000 employees working worldwide. The firm is among industry leaders in research and development, spending nearly 12 per cent of its revenues on this segment.
The business is included in the Fortune Global 500 list of the world’s largest companies.
Bayer shares are listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BAYN. The company is a constituent of the Euro Stoxx 50 Index and the DAX 30 Index.

Founded in 1863, Bayer was part of chemicals giant IG Farben in 1925-52, and then returned to being an independent company. The new millennium saw the landmark acquisition of Schering in 2006 – the largest takeover in Bayer's history, and one of the biggest pharma mergers of all time. In September 2015, the company spun out its materials science division into a separate publicly-traded firm Covestro (1COV), retaining about a 70 per cent interest in the business.
On its website, Bayer explains that its innovative products are contributing to finding solutions to some of the world’s major challenges. The company says it is improving quality of life for a growing population by focusing its R&D on preventing, alleviating and treating diseases. It is also helping to provide a reliable supply of food, feed and plant-based raw materials.
In fact, this 150-year-old company was the first in the world to introduce the flagship healthcare product aspirin. Today, the firm manufactures products that include anti-infectives, antibiotics, oncology, cardiovascular, central nervous system drugs, over-the-counter medications, diagnostics and animal-health products, as well as crop protection products, plastics and polyurethanes.

Bayer AG stock saw a period of almost uninterrupted growth from June 2012, when it traded at €46.87 per share, to April 2015, when it peaked at €143.88 per share. The stock then fell back to €82.79 per share in May 2016, right before recovering to hit €121.9 per share in 2017.
However, the uplift was short-lived, and BAYN stock soon started to lose in value sharply, falling as low as €52.21 per share by June 14, 2019. The share price then retraced some of its losses to end the year at €72.81. On March 23, 2020, the stock closed the trading day at its multi-year lowest of €47.5 per share amid the broader market sell off caused by the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak and consequent economic uncertainty.
Only a month later, in June 2020, BAYN shares were already hovering around the €70 level. Ever since, the Bayer stock price has experienced lots of volatility, characterised by multiple price fluctuations.
