MicroStrategy (MSTR) is an independent publicly traded business intelligence company that provides an enterprise analytics platform. Founded in 1989, the company designs, develops, markets and sells its software platform through licensing agreements, cloud subscriptions and related services. In August 2021, MicroStrategy started its bitcoin acquisition and holding. 

MicroStrategy’s bitcoin business allowed it to raise its profile with potential software customers. On the other hand, its enterprise analytics software business has provided consistent cash flows that enable the company to acquire and hold bitcoin in the long-term.

Its core product offering is a software platform that offers customers:

1. Pervasive and modern analytics allows delivery of insights across multiple clients and devices to users via HyperIntelligence products, visualisation and reporting capabilities, mobility features, and custom applications.

2. Open Architecture allows developers to embed, extend, and inject data visualisations into third-party websites and applications.

3. Enterprise Platform. The platform enables organisations to deliver secure, high-performance applications at scale.

MicroStrategy Consulting and MicroStrategy Education are two of the company’s consulting and education services. Customers can use the services to help them deploy, optimise and manage their analytics initiatives.

Based in Tysons Corner, Virginia, its customers include businesses in retail, consulting, technology, manufacturing, banking, insurance, finance, healthcare, telecommunications and the public sector.

The company does not have a plan to engage in the regular trading of bitcoin. However, it may sell bitcoins in the future to generate cash for treasury management and other general corporate purposes.

The company had not hedged or entered derivative contracts concerning its bitcoin holdings, as of its 2021 Annual Report filing in February 2021. However, it may consider issuing debt or other financial instruments backed by its bitcoin holdings. Furthermore, MicroStrategy may consider strategies to generate income or additional funds from their bitcoin holdings, such as lending bitcoin to counterparties.

MicroStrategy became public on 11 June 1998. Its stock is listed on the Nasdaq under the symbol MSTR.
