What is PayPal?
PayPal is one of the world’s most popular online and mobile payment systems. The well-known American technology company, develops and provides a platform for making digital transactions used worldwide.
Where did PayPal begin?
Founded in 1998 as Confinity, the company initially focused on security software. In 1999, Confinity launched the initial PayPal system. In 2000, the company completed a merger with Elon Musk’s X.com, who at the time concentrated on online banking.
Following the merger, the partners began to focus more on the online money transfer services of PayPal with the company finally undergoing its initial public offering in 2002. It was obtained as a subsidiary of eBay for a total of $1.5 billion.
Currently, PayPal operates as an independent spin-off from eBay. A status that it acquired in 2015. Later in that same year, the entity went public for the second time and was valued at $46 billion.
What are the latest PayPal advancements?
2016 saw the introduction of PayPal’s latest innovation, the PayPal.me peer-to-peer payment platform. The new system allows users to create a personal account with personalised link to which users can send money. Targeting both personal users and small businesses, PayPal boasts its ease of use and security for payments.
Recently, PayPal has also partnered with Coinbase, a platform for buying and selling cryptocurrency, marking the first steps of the company into the crypto world.

From the company’s headquarters, based in San Jose, California, the USA, PayPal offers their services worldwide. The company also has offices across the Americas, Europe and the Middle East, and Asia Pacific, with its European Operations Centres headquartered in Dublin and Dundalk, Ireland.
Currently PayPal provides online payment possibilities to over 202 countries worldwide in 25 different currencies with a strong company focus on global commerce. With over 200 million online accounts, PayPal is one of the most popular online payment systems.

Considering its initial start as a software security company, a huge part of PayPal’s service is the safety of online payments. PayPal offers buyers protection through reimbursement policies, fraud protection though 24/7 transaction monitoring and data encryption technology.
For sellers, the company offers protected sales, proof of delivery, policies regarding items not covered, and resolution support when transactions go wrong.
