Facebook is studying how it to could harness cryptocurrency technology for the benefit of its social media and networking service.
It comes as Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Facebook, joins the board of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.
Zuckerberg said a key aspect of his yearly personal challenge would be to study cryptocurrency and to look at how it can be used within Facebook.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Zuckerberg said his personal goal for 2018 would be to focus on the issues that caused controversy for the company in 2017.
"We won't prevent all mistakes or abuse, but we currently make too many errors enforcing our policies and preventing misuse of our tools," said Zuckerberg. "If we're successful this year then we'll end 2018 on a much better trajectory."
He went on to say that he would also focus research on technology areas such as encryption and cryptocurrencies. Zuckerberg sees developments in these areas as positive because he believes they decentralise power.
It could potentially lead to Facebook adding Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency as a payment option.
