Samsung, SK join push for stake in Westinghouse

By Maekyung News Service

South Korean business groups including Samsung, SK, Hyundai Motor, and Doosan are considering investing up to 4 trillion won ($3 billion) to acquire a 5 percent to 10 percent stake in U.S. nuclear reactor designer Westinghouse Electric Company LLC, in a move to strengthen their foothold in the American nuclear power market.

According to industry sources on Wednesday, SK is exploring a multi trillion-won investment as an anchor investor in a public-private Korean consortium. The initiative follows discussions between Seoul and Washington on building eight nuclear reactors in the United States with a planned investment of $120 billion, with Korean private-sector investors expected to secure a minority stake in Westinghouse.

Other potential participants include Samsung C&T Corp., Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., and Doosan Enerbility Co., which are considering investments worth hundreds of billions of won each.

SK Group has already invested in next-generation nuclear technology, with SK Inc. and SK innovation Co. jointly investing $250 million in U.S. nuclear company TerraPower LLC in 2022. A Westinghouse stake would broaden its strategy from small modular reactors to large-scale nuclear power and AI-related electricity infrastructure.

The investment drive comes as demand for electricity surges with the expansion of AI infrastructure. U.S. President Donald Trump set a goal in May 2025 of quadrupling U.S. nuclear power capacity to 400 gigawatts (GW) by 2050, from about 100GW. The additional 300GW would be equivalent to roughly 210 reactors, assuming 1.4GW per unit.
