AUF WIEDERSEHEN, VOLKSWAGEN

Volkswagen VOWG.DE, which has lost roughly 80% in value since 2021, has left the Euro STOXX 50 .STOXX50E after 15 years in the index of the euro zone's most valuable companies.

The auto sector has been one of the hardest-hit in Europe this year, as intense competition from cheaper Chinese rivals, surging energy prices and volatility from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff agenda have battered the sector.

Volkswagen, Europe's largest automaker, has been engulfed in a crisis that intensified on Friday after it flagged a €10 billion ($11.5 billion) profit warning, mostly at its Porsche P911_p.DE luxury sports brand.

An index of European auto stocks has fallen around 16% this year .SXAP, ranking it among the worst-performing after consumer products .SXCDP.

STOXX, the index provider, announced the decision on September 1 as part of its annual review of leavers and joiners.

Other leavers included Dutch information services provider Wolters Kluwer WLSNc.AS, which has been subject to intense volatility this year as investors attempt to determine the hit to the company from the transformative impact of AI.

Joiners include Nokia NOKIA.HE, whose shares hit an 18-year in June, around a year after being dropped, and French utility Engie ENGIE.PA, Europe's largest gas network operator.

Volkswagen shares are steady on the day.
