JERA and Eneos to develop and operate two gas-fired power units in Chiba
TOKYO, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Japan's biggest power generator JERA and top oil refiner Eneos Holdings 5020.T said on Friday they will jointly develop and operate two gas-fired power-generation units with a combined capacity of 1.74 gigawatts at the Sodegaura power station in Chiba, near Tokyo.
JERA submitted plans in July to the industry ministry to build three new power units to replace ageing facilities at Sodegaura and is currently conducting environmental impact assessments
Of the three planned units, JERA and Eneos Power, Eneos' power-generation and retail subsidiary, will jointly develop and operate two
Bringing in a partner will help reduce investment costs, a spokesperson said. Eneos said the project will help secure competitive generation capacity to meet rising electricity demand
The companies aim to start commercial operations at the No. 1 unit in 2032 and th No. 2 unit in 2033. JERA plans to begin the No. 3 unit in 2041
The two companies will establish a joint venture, owned 66% by JERA and 34% by Eneos Power, by the end of next March. The two units will use gas turbine combined-cycle technology with thermal efficiency of about 64%, among the highest levels globally, the JERA spokesperson said
The companies plan to pursue future decarbonisation through the use of hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and minimise their environmental impact
JERA and Eneos Power, together with a unit of Kyushu Electric Power , also jointly operate the Goi gas-fired power plant in Chiba, which began operations in 2025
