HD Construction Equipment wins 45-excavator Hong Kong order

By Maekyung News Service

HD Construction Equipment will supply 45 DEVELON excavators for MTR Corp.’s Tung Chung Line Extension project in Hong Kong, the company said Wednesday.

The order comprises seven large excavators weighing 53 metric tons each and 38 medium-to-large models ranging from 14 to 36 metric tons. The equipment will be used to construct new stations and extend the railway by about 1.2 kilometers.

Because the construction site is on reclaimed coastal land with weak ground conditions, HD Construction Equipment expects demand for specialized equipment such as long-reach arms designed for work from greater distances. The company also anticipates additional orders for 80- and 100-metric-ton heavy-duty machines.

The company said it secured the order over lower-priced Chinese equipment based on the fuel efficiency of its machines and its customer service. It also highlighted the significance of winning a large-volume order and expanding into medium-to-large equipment in Hong Kong, where its sales had previously focused on smaller models.

Hong Kong is expected to generate steady demand for construction equipment. About HK$90 billion ($11.47 billion) has recently been invested in public transportation expansion and new-town development. Annual investment is projected to reach HK$120 billion if major projects such as the Northern Metropolis, which will strengthen infrastructure links with mainland China, move forward.

HD Construction Equipment has sold 75 heavy machines in Hong Kong this year, its largest annual sales volume in the market in five years.
