EU antitrust regulators objects to MMG's nickel deal with Anglo American

By Reuters News

- EU antitrust regulators on Wednesday sent a charge sheet to Hong Kong-listed mining and metals company MMG 1208.HK over its plan to buy Anglo American's AAL.L Brazilian nickel business, warning the deal may restrict competition and the supply diverted away from Europe.

"MMG could divert the target's low-carbon ferronickel supply towards in particular its affiliated stainless steel producers (controlled by SASAC), and away from European producers," the Euuropean Commission said in a statement of objections.

The Chinese State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) controls China Minmetals Corporation (CMC) which in turn controls MMG.

The warning from the Commission, which acts as the EU competition enforcer, confirmed a Reuters story last week.
