This was a stock index of the 20 largest companies on the Athens Stock Exchange. It was expanded in 2012 to include 25 stocks and again in 2017 to consist of 26 members.

If you follow share prices and stock markets, you may have seen it listed as the FTSE/Athex Large Cap, so called because it comprises the top companies ranked by market capitalisation.

What you need to know about Athex 20.

It was launched in 1997 by FTSE International Ltd. Former members of the Athex 20 include the Bank of Cyprus, Marfin Investment Group and TT Hellenic Postbank. Since 2017, the FTSE/Athex Large Cap index has consisted of 26 members, including Greece’s biggest banks, transport firms and construction groups. The index was affected by the closure of the Athens stock exchange in June 2015, caused by the ongoing Greek financial crisis. The stock exchange reopened five weeks later, losing more than 16% on its first day of trading.
