Tesla, Inc, formerly known as Tesla Motors, Inc, is an American electric vehicle and clean energy company. The California-based business specialises in the development, design, manufacture and sale of energy generation and storage systems, as well as the world-renowned fully electric vehicles. Additionally, the company offers supercharger stations and vehicle service centres.
In 2019, Tesla ranked as the world's best-selling plug-in and battery electric passenger car manufacturer, both as a brand and by automotive group. In the first half of 2020, its cars accounted for 81 per cent of the battery electric vehicles sold in the US.
Tesla shares are traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol TSLA. The company is a constituent of the Nasdaq 100 Index.

Founded in July 2003 as Tesla Motors, the company’s name is a tribute to electrical and mechanical engineer Nikola Tesla. The firm shortened its name to Tesla, Inc in February 2017.
The company’s first car, the Tesla Roadster, was launched in 2008 and featured Tesla’s proprietary battery technology and electric powertrain. Since then, the firm has developed a number of other electric-powered vehicles and expanded its charging network worldwide. While best-known for its cars, Tesla also focuses heavily on energy storage and solar-panel manufacturing.
Today, the business runs a number of production and assembly plants, with its main vehicle manufacturing facility, the Tesla Factory, located in Fremont, California. Other facilities include Giga New York, Giga Nevada and Giga Shanghai.
Tesla global vehicle sales rose from 245,240 units in 2018 to 367,849 units in 2019, representing a growth of nearly 50 per cent. In early 2020, the company reached a milestone of one million electric cars produced, while its Model 3 ranked as the all-time best-selling EV globally, with more than 500,000 units delivered.
On January 10, 2020, with a market capitalisation of $86bn, Tesla became the most valuable American automaker to ever exist. On January 29, it surpassed Volkswagen (VOW3) as the world's second-most valuable automaker by market capitalisation. On July 1, Tesla reached a market capitalisation of $206bn, overtaking Toyota (7203) as the world's most valuable automaker.
After reporting GAAP profitability for four consecutive quarters for the first time from July 2019 to June 2020, Tesla became eligible for inclusion in the S&P 500 Index (US500).

Since its initial listing on the exchange in 2010, the company’s shares have experienced periods of extreme volatility. From June 2010 to June 2017, Tesla Motors stock was mainly in the uptrend, going from its IPO value of $17 up to $383.45. It then saw many lows and highs between July 2017 and November 2018, with an average price range of $250-$350.
On May 22, 2019, shares of the electric-vehicle maker fell below the $200 mark for the first time in more than two years. However, the stock soon recovered to hike past $400 and end the year at $418 per share.
During the broader stock market sell-off caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the TSLA stock price dropped to $361 on March 18, 2020. However, on the next day, the company’s shares soared to $427.64, marking the beginning of the stock’s stellar surge. On August 12, Tesla announced a 5-for-1 stock split to take effect on August 31. The TSLA share price reached an intraday high of $2,129 on August 24.
